Nach dem Abschluß theologischer und philologischer Studien in Jena kam B. 1824 als Erzieher nach Coburg, wurde 1829 Vorleser der Herzogin Auguste und war bis 1834 Privatsekretär in Mainz. Anschließend Archivsekretär beim herzoglichen Oberkonsistorium in Gotha, wurde er 1839 Oberkonsistorialsekretär und 1842 Direktor des Kunstkabinetts sowie des Chinesischen Kabinetts. Seit 1853 Archivrat, verließ er 1858 das Oberkonsistorium und leitete den Gothaer Kunstverein. Er schrieb Gedichte und gab u.a. "Das herzogliche Kunstkabinett zu Gotha" (1853) heraus (Saur, DBE).- An Paul Alois Klar (s. Wurzbach XII, 14ff.; 1801-1860), den Herausgeber des Taschenbuchs "Libussa": "Herr Robert Köhler in Dresden hat mich benachrichtigt, daß Sie mein kleines Gedicht 'Hülfe von Oben' der Aufnahme in Ihre Libussa für 1859 nicht unwerth gefunden [.] Ich fühle mich dadurch hocherfreut und Ihnen zu innigem Dank verpflichtet: Indem ich diesem Dank Ausdruck leihe, verbinde ich damit zugleich den Wunsch, daß dieß für mich der Anfang einer längeren Literarischen Verbindung mit Ihnen . sein möge [.]".
