With a fore-edge painting depicting a scene of HAWICK, ROXBURGHSHIRE, SCOTLAND, after an engraving by John Greig (fl. 1800-1843) from an original study by Luke Clennell (1781-1840). The fore-edge painting is based on an engraving found in Sir Walter Scott's, Border Antiquities of England and Scotland (Longman & Co., 1814-1817). This well-painted scene is likely of 20th century vintage. / The Dutch scholar Peter Burman was professor of the art of rhetoric and the history of Utrecht, and also of Greek philology. In 1715, he succeeded Perizonius, receiving the chair of history and the Greek language and the art of rhetoric at the Lyon-Batava Academy. The first volume of the lives of illustrious and excellent Greek and Roman men paired, and written first in Greek language by the philosopher and true historian Plutarch of Cheronea, and presently translated into Spanish.Ó Printed in Argentina in the house of Agust n Frisio, year of the lord of MDLI. Unknown and unique state of the posthumous issue of Encinas' translation of a selection from Plutarch's parallel Lives. Francis of Enzinas (Burgos, 1518? Strasbourg, 1552), was a notable Protestant humanist, known primarily for his Spanish version of the New Testament (1543). El Burgal had conceived an ambitious project, the Officina Hispanica, which would be responsible for disseminating in Romance language both Greco-Latin works and biblical texts. To this end he worked with the leading Central European printers and booksellers. Thus, during his stay as Professor of Greek at Cambridge (1548-1549), he contacted Arnold Birkmann, who showed keen interest in the dissemination of the Spanish book in Europe in the face of its growing demand. In 1550-1552, the last years of his life, Enzinas settled with his family in Strabus. The first volume of the lives of illvstres and excellent Greek and Roman men paired, and written first in Greek language by the grave Phil sopher and true historian Plutarch of Cheronea, and presently translated into Spanish, by Francisco de Enzinas.
