In den Jahren 1918?1945 war er Staatsangehöriger der Tschechoslowakei, 1902 begegnete er Hugo von Hofmannsthal und 1907 Rainer Maria Rilke. Mit beiden verband ihn lebenslang eine tiefe Freundschaft, mit beiden korrespondierte er. Rilke widmete ihm die achte Duineser Elegie; beide hielten Kassner zeitweise für den hellsichtigsten Kulturphilosophen der Gegenwart.
