Scarce early 20th century primary account of the history and politics of revolutionary Pennsylvania, printed solely for their preservation among the author's descendants; from the library of Philemon Tecumseh Sherman. Octavo, original wrappers. In very good condition with rubbing and a few losses to the extremities and rear pane…l, some creasing to the front panel, and toning to p. 14 and 15 where a newsclipping of 'Out of My Mind To the Freshmen' by Katharine Brush is laid in. General William Tecumseh Shermanâs son P. T. Sherman was a lawyer in New York, specializing in labor and insurance, and was elected a member of the New York Board of Alderman in the late 1880s. In the early 1900s, he was appointed the New York Commissioner of Labor. He transferred his library to his niece, Eleanor Sherman Fitch, the granddaughter of General Sherman through his eldest daughter, Maria âMinnieâ Ewing Sherman Fitch, before he died. Until now, this set was held at the family estate in Washington County, Pennsylvania. Absalom Baird was a career United States Army officer who received the Medal of Honor for leading "an assault upon the enemy's works" at the Battle of Jonesborough in the American Civil War. Nominated by President Abraham Lincoln in 1865 for appointment to the brevet grade of major general of volunteers and by President Andrew Johnson in 1866 for appointment as brevet brigadier general in the Regular Army, Baird retired from the Army on August 20, 1888, having served over thirty years until the mandatory retirement age of 64.
