Añadir al carritoPaperback. Condición: new. Paperback. The J-20 fifth generation stealth fighter program has epitomised China's rise from a laggard in combat aviation into a world leader. J-20 Mighty Dragon: Asia's First Stealth Fighter in the Era of China's Military Rise details the J-20's technologies, capabilities, production timeline, design priorities, roles, evolution, and the choice of brigades and locations where it has been deployed, the ways other countries have responded to it, and how the last 30 years of China's industrial and technology sector modernisation positioned the country to produce what may well now be the world's top air superiority fighter. The J-20 program is the most high-profile indicator of a turning point in the balance of power between China and the United States, and has produced by far the most capable fighter that America or its allies could face in a potential conflict. An assessment of the history of Chinese air superiority capabilities, and how the Korean War in particular has influenced the country to place a very strong emphasis on the need to field a leading fighter for air-to-air combat, thus provides an important deeper understanding of the program. Important context to understanding the J-20's significance and its current global standing is provided by brief assessments of the positions of the Russian and American fighter industries. The parallel development of supporting assets from aerial tankers to electronic warfare planes is also explored for a better understanding of the much-transformed Chinese fleet which J-20s are being inducted into. The program is also shown to have had a particularly significant influence in the United States, ranging from placing discourse on the F-35's modernisation and on sixth generation fighter development in an entirely new context, to stimulating the formation of new counter-stealth aggressor training units, development of new air-to-air missiles, and acquisitions of E-7 'flying radar' aircraft among many other responses to the new challenge. J-20 Mighty Dragon: Asia's First Stealth Fighter in the Era of China's Military Rise is extensively illustrated with color photographs throughout and specially commissioned color artworks. AUTHOR: Abraham Abrams is an expert in East Asian military affairs and security. He holds a masters degree in War Studies from King's College London as well as a Masters in East Asian International Relations, and is currently pursuing a related PhD. Having followed the J-20 program's development closely since before its entry into service, the writer is a long-time analyst of China's defense sector and major weapons programs as well as broader trends in international security affecting China and its neighbors. His assessment of the fighter program thus places it in historical and geopolitical contexts to provide a fuller understanding of its significance. 98 colour photos, 1 colour illustration, 2 b/w photos, 27 colour profiles, 1 colour map The J-20 fifth generation stealth fighter program has epitomised China's rise from a laggard in combat aviation into a world leader. Añadir al carritoHardcover. Condición: new. Hardcover. The United States and Soviet Union began a race to develop the first and most capable fifth generation stealth fighters in the late 1970s. The Cold War's end, however, was followed by both a near total collapse of Russian efforts and major cuts and delays to American programs. This provided an opening for a rising and fast modernising Chinese defence industry to kick off its own ambitious program to produce a world leading fighter jet with next generation capabilities. Once unveiled, the program came to be seen as a herald of China's rising status as a leading player in high tech and major world power. Development of the Chengdu J-20 began in the 1990s and has since consistently far exceeded expectations in both its performance and its development timeline. The fighter made its first flight in 2011 and began deliveries to the People's Liberation Army Air Force in 2016 a small fraction of the time its American and Russian rivals would take. Today it is the world's second most numerous stealth fighter, outnumbered only by America's much smaller Lockheed Martin F-35 Lightning II, with the two rivals seeing their first of many likely encounters confirmed in March 2022\. As the J-20's capabilities have rapidly improved and the rate of production has significantly grown, it has very conspicuously played a growing role in patrolling major hotspots in East Asia from Korea and the East China Sea to the Taiwan Strait and disputed South China Sea. The J-20 program's success has been the most potent symbol of China's ascent from a minor player in combat aviation during the Cold War, to the United States' only peer level competitor today. It has also set China on a course of pursuing multiple other fighter development efforts including a close competition with America to field the first and most capable sixth generation fighter in the 2030s. The J-20 thus marks a major landmark not only in Chinese aviation history, but also more broadly in the evolving balance of power between East and West as the country's technological and economic ascents allow it to successfully pursue highly ambitious weapons programs. This book takes the J-20's story far back to the formation of the People's Liberation Army Air Force and its trial by fire in the Korean War, tracing the rationale for developing a top end air superiority fighter. It also compares its performance with rival fifth generation fighter programs in other countries and looks ahead to what the future may hold in this new arms race. A Winner of the Barondess/Lincoln Award A Washington Independent Review of Books Favorite Book of 2018 A Suspense Magazine Best Book of 2018 A Mental Floss Best Book of 2018 A USA Today Top 10 Hot Book for Summer "Makes you feel as if you are watching a live camera riveted on a courtroom more than 150 years ago." --Diane Sawyer The true story of Abraham Lincoln's last murder trial, a case in which he had a deep personal involvement--and which played out in the nation's newspapers as he began his presidential campaign At the end of the summer of 1859, twenty-two-year-old Peachy Quinn Harrison went on trial for murder in Springfield, Illinois. Abraham Lincoln, who had been involved in more than three thousand cases--including more than twenty-five murder trials--during his two-decades-long career, was hired to defend him. This was to be his last great case as a lawyer. What normally would have been a local case took on momentous meaning. Lincoln's debates with Senator Stephen Douglas the previous fall had gained him a national following, transforming the little-known, self-taught lawyer into a respected politician. He was being urged to make a dark-horse run for the presidency in 1860. Taking this case involved great risk. His reputation was untarnished, but should he lose this trial, should Harrison be convicted of murder, the spotlight now focused so brightly on him might be dimmed. He had won his most recent murder trial with a daring and dramatic maneuver that had become a local legend, but another had ended with his client dangling from the end of a rope. The case posed painful personal challenges for Lincoln. The murder victim had trained for the law in his office, and Lincoln had been his friend and his mentor. His accused killer, the young man Lincoln would defend, was the son of a close friend and loyal supporter. And to win this trial he would have to form an unholy allegiance with a longtime enemy, a revivalist preacher he had twice run against for political office--and who had bitterly slandered Lincoln as an "infidel.too lacking in faith" to be elected. Lincoln's Last Trial captures the presidential hopeful's dramatic courtroom confrontations in vivid detail as he fights for his client--but also for his own blossoming political future. It is a moment in history that shines a light on our legal system, as in this case Lincoln fought a legal battle that remains incredibly relevant today. Look for Dan Abrams and David Fisher's latest book, Theodore Roosevelt for the Defense, coming in May 2019.

Añadir al carritoHardcover. Condición: new. Hardcover. Developed under the largest weapons program in history, the F-35 Joint Strike Fighter is today in production on a larger scale than any other manned combat jet in the world, with its capabilities having greater implications for the global balance of power than those of any other military asset. The extent to which the U.S. Armed Forces and American strategic partners rely on the fighter remains wholly unprecedented, with the large majority of U.S. Air Force fighter procurements, all those by the Marine Corps, and from 2027 all those by the Navy, being F-35s. As the only fighter of its generation in production in the Western world, evaluations made across multiple tenders have consistently concluded that the F-35 operates in an entirely different league to other Western combat jets, with this superiority giving the program a particular significance in an era of high geopolitical tensions. This book details the primary combat aviation and broader technological trends that have influenced the F-35's development, the aircraft's design features and ever-evolving capabilities, how it has been tested, manufactured, procured, and employed, and the expanding set of roles it has been relied on to fulfil. Interviews are widely drawn on to provide insight into multiple aspects of the program, from its production to its frontline operations. The management of the program ranging from efforts to reduce procurement and sustainment costs, to decisionmaking regarding the integration of new technologies, is explored in detail. The global nature of the F-35 program, the facilitators of its major export successes, and the aircraft's ability to meet challenges from a range of adversary capabilities, are also detailed, as are the likely future trajectories the program will take moving into the sixth generation era. The book highlights both the tremendous achievements of the F-35 program, many of which have been wholly unprecedented and unparalleled, as well as its many often severe shortcomings which have made the aircraft less of a game changer than was otherwise set to be the case. AUTHOR: Abraham Abrams is an expert in East Asian military affairs and security. He holds a masters degree in War Studies from King's College London with a dissertation focusing on the post-Cold War modernisation of the Chinese People's Liberation Army, as well as a prior Masters in East Asian International Relations, and is currently pursuing a related PhD. Having followed the J-20 program's development closely since before its entry into service, the writer is a long-time analyst of China's defence sector and major weapons programs as well as broader trends in international security affecting China and its neighbours. His assessment of the fighter program thus places it in historical and geopolitical contexts to provide a fuller understanding of its significance. 1 b/w photo, 188 colour photos, 23 colour profiles, 2 diagrams A detailed and comprehensive assessment of the F-35 Joint Strike Fighter program, from its origins in the early 1990s, to its current operational status, modernisation, and likely future development.
