Añadir al carritoSoft cover. Condición: Near Fine. An important study of the Yemen Arab Republic population, building on its first Census. Original printed wraps 17x24cm. 108pp Arabic text with several b/w maps, colour and b/w photos, and data tables. Near fine except for some red ink underlining (p32, 37, 38), with presentation ink stamp to the title page. Part of a series of papers issued jointly by the Geography Department of Kuwait University, and the Kuwait Geographical Society. Its Editorial Board included the University's Head of Geography Dr Abdullah Al-Ghunaim, and KGS President Ibrahim Al-Shatti. They published papers of direct interest to countries in the Arabian Gulf, as well as more general and widely applicable studies. These were either prepared in Kuwait, or translated from other sources usually by Geography Department staff with a new introduction. Al-Saadi was at this time Assistant Professor of Geography at the University of Baghdad, and would become regarded as one of the pioneering figures in Iraqi geography. He notes that the main problem for his study was the lack of data. This is unsurprising given Yemen's first Census only took place in 1975. This counted 4.7 million people, prior to which there were very widely ranging and generally unreliable estimates. Taking the Census as reliable, Al-Saadi focuses on distribution in Tihama and the Central and Eastern Plateau regions, natural and human factors, and characteristics. He found half the population to be in the important agricultural regions. Out-migration might not affect distribution much, as migrants retain ties with their villages. Secondly, more than half of Yemen is made up of rocky barren regions, sparcely populated with many very small and scattered settlements. This poses challenges for providing health, education, electricity and other services. For development projects in these areas to succeed (eg through building new transport links, irrigation for agriculture, and larger settlements), he urges planners to first take account of existing tribal systems and their underlying geographical and economic influences. He also identifies 3 types of settlement across Yemen: 1) Agglomerated with high density large populations as in Taiz and Ibb; 2) Scattered low density as in Eastern Plateau (Marib, Al Jawf, Al Bayda) and basins of mountainous areas; and 3) Linear along roads, rivers and canals such as valleys crossing the Tihama Plain and along the Red Sea coast. Photos show traditional urban and rural dwellings, settlements and landscapes, with the author pictured on the qat terraces of Gebel Manakhah. The maps show terrain, examples of linear settlements, rainfall patterns, distribution of Yemeni tribes, distribution changes in 1975 and 1981, density, administrative divisions, numbers, and areas of concentration.…
