În perioada cuprinsa între sfârsitul secolului al XIX-lea si finalul celui de-al Doilea Razboi Mondial, Ungaria si România au trecut prin modificari teritoriale si transformari demografice profunde. În aceasta perioada, eugenistii români si maghiari, dar si cei germani au publicat substantial despre asa-zisa stiinta a îmbunatatirii rasei umane, s-au organizat în societati academice, au organizat dezbateri publice si prelegeri populare, au influentat politici sanitare, de sanatate publica si educationale. De asemenea, unii dintre ei au contribuit la formularea si apoi punerea în practica a politicilor de excludere sociala si purificare etnica, de la deportari si schimburi de populatie pâna la Holocaust. Lucrarea traseaza carierele stiintifice ale unor eugenisti reprezentativi din cele doua tari si descrie totodata modul în care fiecare dintre ei a articulat stiintific teoriile eugenice propuse. Mai mult, acesti autori si ideile lor eugenice sunt contextualizati pentru a-si putea gasi locul în domeniul mai larg al istoriografiei, dar si în dezbaterile curente despre memorie, mosteniri culturale, istorie comuna si, nu în ultimul rând, despre resurgenta etnonationalismelor.
