Hinges professionally reinforced; binding remains sound and firm. Leather rubbed and scuffed, with chipping and wear at the spine ends and extremities; rear board moderately rubbed. Original red-and-black title leaf, approximately 27.1 x 18.2 cm, from the important early Paris edition of the collected historical works of Flavius Jo…sephus, containing the Jewish Antiquities, Jewish War, Contra Apionem and associated editorial apparatus. The title is printed dramatically in red and black within an elaborate Renaissance woodcut architectural compartment incorporating columns, figures, fantastic animals, heraldic ornament and grotesques, with the device of Parisian bookseller Jean Petit centrally positioned beneath the text. The specialist French Post-Incunables bibliography identifies this edition as printed at Paris by Antoine Bonnemère for Jean Petit and François Regnault on 1 April 1519, using the title-page compartment of Nicolas Des Prez and the device of Jean Petit. A complete institutional copy digitised by Queen's University confirms the title-page format, red-and-black printing, woodcut border and device, and records the work's production in Paris in 1519. Josephus is one of the fundamental ancient literary sources for Jewish history under Roman rule, the First Jewish-Roman War and the destruction of Jerusalem; this particular edition also contains the celebrated and much-discussed Testimonium Flavianum at folio CLXX recto. The verso opens the prefatory material associated with editor Robert Goulet. Condition very good overall: light general toning and occasional spotting, slight marginal wear and upper-right corner creasing, several early or later manuscript inscriptions and marks to the title including a manuscript "1519" beneath the device, and two broad old mounting hinges to the upper margin of the verso; the principal red-and-black title, elaborate woodcut compartment and Petit device remain substantially complete, crisp and highly decorative. An unusually attractive original title leaf from a major French post-incunable edition of Josephus.
