Dust jacket with semi-surrealist front panel illustration by Arthur Hawkins, Jr. Dj rubbed with a few nicks at panel edges, shallow chipping at both spine ends, lengthwise swath of horizontal toning at top of front pane…l, rear panel has toning at top edge and vertical swath along flap fold, patch of surface peeling at both top and bottom of rear panel as well, toning at top and bottom edges of both flaps with black tape residue at terminal edges, small loss at front flap's top corner. Brown boards decorated with blue stamping, obtrusive black tape strips adhered at descending and ascending from top and bottom edges of each board with some residue where tape was partially removed, small patch of surface peeling to front board from tape removal, minor bumping and slight scuffing at spine ends. Foxing to edges and particularly strong upon fore-edge; toning to endpapers; vertical residue from removed tape strips on each pastedown; front free endpaper's top right has date stamp (May 31, 1948) and three-line ink notation regarding lending prices (the only lending library mark now present); ffep also chipped at bottom fore-edge corner with toning affecting front flyleaf's bottom corner; occasional foxing/brown staining to interior pages. Binding is firm. Kenneth Millar achieved fame as a mystery writer under his pseudonym Ross Macdonald (aka John Macdonald and John Ross Macdonald). THE THREE ROADS was Millar's fourth book following THE DARK TUNNEL (NY: Dodd, Mead, 1944), TROUBLE FOLLOWS ME (NY: Dodd, Mead, 1946), and BLUE CITY (NY: Knopf, 1947). THE THREE ROADS had a cinematic adaptation released in 1980 under the title "Deadly Companion" starring Michael Sarrazin and Anthony Perkins.
