Condición: Very good. February 11, 1966., 1966. Very good. - Over 60 words typed on his 3-1/4 inch high by 5-1/2 inch wide personal postcard with his name printed along the top. Lloyd Biggle, Jr. writes to apologize to Reginald Bretnor for the oversight, "You joined at the moment when Damon had just stopped being 'everything' to become President and the Secretary-Treasurer hadn't yet found out what was going on." Signed "Lloyd". There is a minor smudge, else very good. The American musician, author, and oral historian Lloyd Biggle, Jr. (1923-2002) was highly regarded in science fiction circles as the author who introduced aesthetic into literature known for scientific and technical complications. His work often used musical and artistic themes and his novel "The Tunesmith" was highly influential in the life of science fiction novelist Orson Scott Card as well as songwriter Jimmy Webb. Biggle's science fiction characters included the matter-transmission, trouble-shooting team of Jan Darzek and Effie Schlupe. Biggle was the founding sevretary-treasurer of the Science Fiction Writers of America. Born Alfred Reginald Kahn, the Russian-American science fiction writer Reginald Bretnor (1911-1992) wrote numerous short stories, many of which featured a whimsical story line or ironic plot twist, as well as volumes on military theory and public affairs. His collection of short stories titled "Through Time and Space with Ferdinand Feghoot", published under the pseudonym of Grendel Briarton, gave birth to the humorous story pun which came to be called a "Feghoot". The stories were originally published in Fantasy and Science Fiction for 1956 through 1973 and, in 1973, the magazine ran a contest soliciting "Feghoots" from its readers and writers.

The card is in fair condition, on lightly-aged paper, neatly and attractively tipped-in onto a 4to leaf which also carries a photograph of 'FREDERIC HARRISON' cut from a magazine, with both items placed within ruled borders. Laid down on a second 4to leaf, and also within a ruled border, is a second photograph of Harrison, captioned 'FREDERIC HARRISON | Author of "The Creed fo a Layman." (Apologia Pro Fide Mea).' Both photographs and mounts are in very good condition. The card is addressed to Goss at the Melrose Savings Bank, Melrose, Massachusetts. Harrison expresses his gratification 'by kind letter which has been seen by my Publishers'. He has written 'on the President's fine message in the forthcoming Positivist Review of London for January 1907', and feels this might interest Goss. He concludes: 'You have the advantage of me by one year. Let us descend the Hill gaily together.'.

Florence Montgomery's 1869 novel 'Misunderstood' was admired by Henry James, Charles Lutwidge Dodgson and George Du Maurier, and was childhood reading of Vladimir Nabokov. It has been adapted for cinema twice (in Italy in 1966, in Hollywood in 1984). The present item is 4pp, 12mo. Bifolium. In envelope addressed to 'Mrs. William Levi | Woughton Hall | Bletchley'. (The recipient Lilian Maud Levi was the granddaughter of Sir Henry Cunningham Montgomery, and the daughter of the Dean of Worcester Grantham Munton Yorke.) The postmark gives the year as 1921. A personal letter on the death of a relative, filled with family information, beginning: 'My dear Lilian | Dear Coutie's death has been so sudden, & at a time when there were hardly any posts, that it has been impossible to get any news about her; except from the letter Winnie Ormond wrote to me to announce it, & to tell me when the Funeral was to be'. She complains about the delay in receiving the letter and another from 'Arthur de [Celts?]', whom she asked 'to represent our Branch of the Family as I did not like to think none of us should be there [] He tells me there were very few there only Winnie Ormond & her Husband; & two Lytteltons (Sir Neville & the Clergyman, whose name I think, is Albert) Arthur himself & poor Cooper - & of course Gerard [Freius?] No one else!' She has 'heard nothing from anyone since' and 'cannot remember anyone's address', so asks for those of two women, the latter being Edith Yorke, whose 'little allowance' from 'Coutie' she is anxious to pay: 'I fear, as it is due now, she may be very distressed for want of it'. She ends the letter on the subject of 'Gerard', whom she finds has left Berkhampstead the year before.

12mo: 1 p. On discoloured paper with wear at head and traces of previous mount adhering to blank reverse. He sent the publishers Chatto & Windus her novel the previous Monday, 'begging them to write to you on the matter, and giving your work my best recommendation'. He has not heard anything from them himself, but expects it will 'take a week or two, before they can give an opinion'. The recipient may be Edith Nesbit, although this is unlikely as Nesbit was her maiden name. She became Edith Bland in 1880. None of her works appear to have been published by Chatto & Windus.

Hardcover. Condición: Very Good. 1st Edition. 2 +120 full-page diagrams on 60 leaves+14 leaves of solutions with frontispiece. Small octavo (7 1/2" x 5 1/4") bound in original publisher's red cloth with gilt lettering to cover. Autograph letter by Joseph William Abbott, signed and dated March 20, 1888 tipped in. From the library of Lothar Schmid. (Linde - No. 2472; Betts 33-1; Kieler Schachkatalog 6579) First edition. The work is a curated collection of tactical enigmas, primarily focusing on two-move and three-move checkmate problems. Many of the featured compositions were highly regarded entries that previously won prizes in major problem tournaments during the late 19th century. It was written for players who enjoy chess strictly as a puzzle or enigma, omitting dense theoretical explanations in favor of pure tactical study. One of the most famous puzzles from this book is Problem No. 12 (found on page 8), often referred to by chess communities as "The Abbott's Conundrum". It features a "Rex Solis" style scenario where a lone Black King faces a heavy assortment of White pieces. The solution requires White to play the surprising key move 1. Be4! This sacrificial move grants the Black king escape squares but successfully forces a mate on the second move against any defense. Swiggum (1923-2015) went to church every week with his family. But he drifted away from his faith as a teenager. After high school, he worked as a welder and then was drafted into the Navy toward the end of World War II. The Navy sent him to the island of Saipan. Out of sheer boredom, he began reading the only thing available - the New Testament, which the soldiers received from the American Bible Society. As he read the Bible each day, he realized that his teenage rebellion was not against the Christ of the Scriptures, but against the way Scriptures had been distorted. He saw the need for a better understanding of the Bible and believed that people's lives could drastically change once they were confronted with the true living Christ. After the war, Harley graduated from a Christian college and seminary. He was then called as an Associate Pastor at Bethel Lutheran Church in Madison, WI. It was in this role that he was inspired to develop an adult Christian education program for his church. Harley trained a core group of people using a disciplined, high-commitment approach, and then used their gifts to teach the rest of the congregation. An experiment that started with 28 trainees quickly mushroomed into training hundreds of people at his church. Based on this remarkable success, the Adult Christian Education Foundation was established to offer the Bethel Bible Series to other pastors and congregations. Today, more than 2 million people have participated in congregations around the world. This Bible study has been translated into more than 12 languages and extended far beyond the U.S. to connect with Christians in Canada, Japan, South Korea, South Africa, China, Costa Rica, Colombia, Mexico, Kenya, Tanzania, Australia, Indonesia - and more" ;"Anyone seriously confronted with Jesus of Nazareth is going to be transformed in the way he or she thinks about everything. The Bethel Bible Series was written to enhance the student's understanding of the Christian faith. The basic concept of a simple overview under disciplined training is timeless. It has proven that." -- Dr. Harley Swiggum ; Walter Emil Ohlson (1893-1974) spent over 50 years In Chicago as a commercial artist. 2pp., 12mo; 1p., 8vo. On bifolium, with the 8vo page written lengthwise across the central two pages. In good condition, on lightly-aged paper. He discusses an article in the 'Mercury', which Latimer has sent him, which 'revived many incidents and persons and recalled a byegone age upon which neither you nor I can look back without mingled feelings of regret and thankfulness'. He feels that there is 'much in the present widely different from that with which our careers commenced, and much less noble in its aims and operations there can be no doubt'; nevertheless 'man has risen higher in the scale of intellect and the aspirations'. He is sending Latimer 'a copy of the leaflet we have prepared for the New and Popular Edition of "The Care of the Sick" we are now about to issue. You will be pleased to know that the whole of the fourth edition of 1,000 copies and a considerable part of the Fifth were subscribed by the Trade before publication.' He notes that Latimer is 'having a tremendous fuss with "the Catte-in-the-water" at Plymouth - will all the "Rats" be expelled? or will they kill the "Catte"?' He concludes by discussing a 'proposed "amalgamation scheme" in course of construction in Torquay with the object of "taking in" Cockington and St. Marychurch'. Endean received a brief obituary in The Times, 31 December 1923: 'Mr. James Russell Endean, who was elected to the School Board for London in 1884, died at Essex House, Coulsdon, on December 29, at the age of 97. He was the author of a monograph on the public education of Austria, besides many other writings, including contributions to The Times.'.
