John Wesley Powell (1834-1902) was an American explorer, Civil War veteran, scientist, and public intellectual best known for leading the first successful expeditions through the Colorado River and the Grand Canyon in 1869 and 1871-72. Having lost his right arm at the Battle of Shiloh, Powell became a symbol of postwar scientific exploration, combining firsthand fieldwork with rigorous analysis of the American West. As second director of the U.S. Geological Survey and longtime head of the Bureau of American Ethnology, he argued that western settlement should be planned around watersheds and water availability rather than arbitrary political boundaries.

General Sheridan was an honorary member of the Bunker Hill Monument Association, elected in 1869, along with U.S. Grant, William T. Sherman, David Farragut, and John A. Winslow. General Philip H. Sheridan (1831-1888) was known for his aggressive leadership in major Civil War campaigns, such as the Shenandoah Valley Campaign of 1864, using scorched earth tactics to cripple Confederate forces and resources. Sheridan also commanded the Cavalry Corps of the Army of the Potomac, contributing to the defeat of General Robert E. Lee's forces at Appomattox. After the war, he oversaw military operations in the Reconstruction South and the Indian Wars, including the campaigns against the Plains Indians. Sheridan became General of the Army in 1883.
