Discussing 'Mr Sterling's Pamphlet on Banks', which MacLehose has sent him ('a work so difficult to obtain elsewhere'). Añadir al carrito3pp., 12mo. Bifolium. In fair condition, on aged and unevenly-sunned paper. He begins by giving six numbered points which 'will do for the Introduction' to a prospectus for a magazine. The first reads: 'The biographical & archaeological portion of the Magazine will be placed under the superintendance of the Revd Professor Christmas, M.A. F.R.S.' The succeeding points refer to other sections, with the names of those in charge of three of them added later: 'Biblical Illustrations and religious information' ('Mr Power'); 'Natural History & General Science' ('Mr Wood'); 'Literature and Poetry Reviews' (' Baynes'). He considers it 'quite necessary to have some name for each of the above but especially nos II & III'. He concludes: 'written to Messrs Wood & Morris', but does not have their addresses. 'with regard to Poetry I would say | A series of poems chiefly original and chosen, when selected, from the works of the most gifted writers of Devotional Poetry will appear in the successive numbers of the Magazine under the title of "Lyra Evangelica" It is contemplated after a certain time to form these into a volume - which it is hoped may be acceptable to the Christian Church'. Christmas edited the Church of England Quarterly Review (1840-1843 and 1854-1858), The Churchman (1840-1843), the British Churchman (1845-1848), and the Literary Gazette (1859-1860).…

Añadir al carritoCondición: Good. Handcoloured engraving. 49 x 62cm. sheet size. Marginal tears/.Peel 2278; Morgan Library Record ID:185903: .Print shows the interior of a country barbershop, where the barber, his assistant, and a boy, are engaged in shaving and wig-dressing. An elderly rustic sits full-face and well-lathered in an arm-chair in the centre of the shop, while a lean and tattered barber holds the bowl. A stout farmer in top-boots (left) with a stubbly face dubiously contemplates a wig, which he holds on a tall wig-block.///// On the right a fat barber painfully shaves an old man, while a younger customer stanches a cut over a basin. A young boy in front of them holds two elaborately curled legal wigs. A long judge's wig, uncurled, hangs from a wig-block. Behind (left) a prim, elderly man in a newly dressed wig adjusts his neck-cloth at a small mirror; a coachman in back view puts on his tightly curled wig. .There are also two dogs, two cats, a magpie taking part of a wig from a box on the floor, and another bird in a cage. Above the door (right) are fishing-rods and a creel. On the wall are four prints: a naval battle (framed); a view of the "County Gaol"; an execution scene; and a skeleton fiddling to exulting demons. There is also "A Calendar of the Prisoners to be Tried. . . ".The room is ramshackle with a casement window, bricks showing through the plaster. From the roof hang a ham and a bundle of turnips and carrots. Cf. BM Satires. From the collection of Frederic Gale Ruffner, Jr., the founder of Gale Research, Detroit.…

Añadir al carrito2pp., 12mo. Bifolium with mourning border. In good condition, lightly aged and worn, with the blank second leaf tipped-in onto a leaf from an album. His only excuse for 'the long delay' is 'that all my time has been occupied in taking stock, which necessarily has been a most irksome job'. It will be the following month before he can 'put forth an appendix to my Catalogue, as it will be necessary for me to wait the coming event of something, that I may, or may not be engaged in.' He will have time 'to consider & reconsider' Huggins's 'advertisement'. He concludes on the subject of the Soane Museum (near to his premises): 'everything remains a mystery, when I can hear of any of their doings, I shall immediately apprise you of them'. See the two men's entries in the Oxford DNB.…

Añadir al carritoCondición: Good. Handcolored etching. 35 x 25cm. Encased in a sleeve.BM J,4.46:Description Fox, as a beggar, stands hat in hand beside a magnificent brass-bound treasure-chest, with a slit for money, inscribed 'Catalines Subscription Box'. He says, "Pray Remmember Poor Cataline. for Oppositions sake remmember poor Cataline." He weeps, his coat, waistcoat, breeches, and shoes are tattered, his stockings ungartered; dice-box and dice protrude from his pocket. The chest stands against a stone wall and is backed by a large framed notice: 'Supported by Voluntary | Contribution | Subscribers taken in here | The smallest Donations thankfully Reced | Charity covereth a Multitude of Sins . . . | And Humble Petitioner as in Duty Bound | Will Ever Pray' Presents monies Missing to Dad - one Million Cataline P.W. 1100,000 S T 5000 for Party D.E. 60 000 Sundries - 600,000 Purposes B.D. . . 50 won at Play }200,000 C.E. 10 000 P.W. Beneath this is a heart-shaped collecting-box and a small bill: 'No Money'. On the wall a hand points (left): 'Way to the Crown and Anchor'. The title continues: 'alias the Dissipated Patriot, alias the Gamester, alias the Leader of Opposition alias the Word Eater [see BMSat 7390], alias the Soliciter for the French republic [see BMSat 8305] alias S------t Breeches [see BMSat 6580] alias the Protector [cf. BMSat 6380, &c] turned Begger.' 14 June 1793.Curator's comments (Description and comment from M.Dorothy George, 'Catalogue of Political and Personal Satires in the British Museum', VII, 1942) A satire on the subscription for Fox, see BMSat 8331, &c. 'Monies Missing' is an allusion to the squandering of Lord Holland's fortune, see BMSat 5223 (1774). The significance of the initials, other than those indicating the Prince of Wales (then estranged from Fox, cf. BMSat 8311), is obscure; they may (reversed) indicate Earl of Derby, Duke of Bedford, Earl of Carlisle, Duke of Portland. For Fox's winnings at faro see BMSats 5972, 5997 (1782). For Fox as Catiline see BMSat 6784, &c. For the title cf. BMSat 8142.Provenance : From the collection of Frederic Gale Ruffner, Jr., the founder of Gale Research, Detroit.…
