Discussion deux jours avant la dissolution sur les conditions de la dispartion de la Compagnie des Indes le 3 avril 1790, l'Assemblée nationale décrète que la compagnie est libre pour tous les Français » et prive ainsi la Compagnie de son monopole. Réunis en ass…emblée générale le 10 avril, les actionnaires nomment huit commissaires chargés d'étudier une éventuelle continuation de l'activité, parmi ceux-ci Dangirard, Monneron (fondateur de la Caisse des comptes courants), et Sabatier. Le 23 mai, les actionnaires décident la reprise d'activité et nomment quatre commissaires ? Delessert, Fulchiron, Gautier et Mallet ? chargés de rédiger les statuts de la nouvelle Compagnie des Indes. Le capital est réduit à trente millions et le nombre de comptoirs ramené à sept : Pondichéry, Yanaon, Mahé, Canton, Surat, l'île de France (Maurice aujourd'hui) et l'île de La Réunion. La libéralisation et la Révolution ne gênent pas la marche des affaires qui connaissent une croissance régulière et le cours de l'action atteint 1 500 livres. - - - - - La Compagnie des Indes orientales ? plus précisément Compagnie française pour le commerce des Indes orientales ? est une entreprise coloniale française créée par Colbert en 1664 dont l'objet était de « naviguer et négocier depuis le cap de Bonne-Espérance presque dans toutes les Indes et mers orientales », avec monopole du commerce lointain pour cinquante ans. Plus que sa rivale anglaise, elle forme une véritable puissance dans l'océan Indien entre 1720 et 17402, puis devient centrale dans les grandes spéculations boursières sous Louis XVI. Sa création avait pour but de donner à la France un outil de commerce international avec l'Asie et de concurrencer les puissantes Compagnies européennes fondées au xviie siècle, comme la Compagnie anglaise des Indes orientales et surtout la Compagnie néerlandaise des Indes orientales. Cependant, la guerre d'usure avec les Néerlandais puis le choc frontal avec les Anglais en Inde la conduiront à sa perte, après seulement un siècle d'existence. En 1719, John Law la fusionne avec d'autres sociétés de commerce françaises qu'il avait contribué à réorganiser, entre autres la Compagnie du Sénégal, la Compagnie de Chine, la Compagnie du Mississippi, et la Compagnie de la Louisiane dont il avait obtenu le contrôle en échange d'une dette fiscale contractée par Antoine Crozat. Law fonde alors une super compagnie appelée la « Compagnie perpétuelle des Indes », l'équivalent d'une moderne holding, qui gère l'ensemble du trafic maritime colonial français. Ne devant en conserver qu'un seul, c'est à cette occasion que la compagnie adopte le sceau ainsi que, bien qu'elles représentent des amérindiens, les armes de la Compagnie d'Occident, créée deux ans plus tôt. Chose curieuse, Law combine la gestion des participations à l'ensemble des services chargés des rentrées fiscales du Royaume. Missionnée pour renégocier la dette publique puis pour collecter les impôts, la Compagnie perpétuelle émet des actions dont les intérêts sont payables en billets de la Banque royale, laquelle possède une part importante du capital de la dite compagnie. Ce montage repose sur la confiance des souscripteurs et la garantie du Roi, mais sa structure touchant au gigantisme manque de souplesse. En janvier 1720, la Banque générale et la Compagnie perpétuelle fusionnent : l'actionnariat consolidé s'élève à plus d'1,5 milliard de livres tournois, du jamais vu. L'argument de John Law est que les richesses coloniales potentielles de la France sont inépuisables et qu'il faut bâtir sur cette manne un nouveau système. À sa façon, il va survendre cet Eldorado : bon nombre de bateaux n'arrivant pas au port, « l'or des colonies » ne peut couvrir les millions de titres émis de toutes façons en surnombre. Law n'est pas le seul à manipuler ainsi l'opinion, les cours de la Bourse et les financiers : au même moment, les directions des compagnies d'Amsterdam et Londres usent de pratiques similaires.

Je suis très fâché de ne pouvoir pas vous voir, et plus encore de vous entendre disposé a partir si tôt que le Médecin vous le permettra [.]". - Added is a copied mémoire entitled "Copie du Mémoire de M. Regny au M.re des affaires Etrangères" (8 April 1819), sent to minister Jean-Joseph Dessolles (1767-1828), concerning three bills of exchange over a sum of 90,000 francs, drawn on Querini in 1797 during his time as ambassador in Paris. It is stated that Querini testifies to have acted according to the orders of his government, and as meanwhile he became subject to the Emperor of Austria, the claims on the bills devolved to the Austrian Empire. Armand du Plessis, 5th Duke of Richelieu and Fronsac (1766-1822), is stated already to have recognized the legal rights of this claim of a sum total of 208,000 fl. (including interest), and passed the matter on to the French ambassador in Vienna, Victor de Riquet, Duke of Caraman (1762-1839). Further persons mentioned to have been involved in the matter are François Dewinck, the Venetian count Wiscowich, and Joseph de Salomon, bishop of Ortosia. - With slight brownstainings.

Size 21.5 x 13.25 Inches. This is a rare 1790 Pierre-François Palloy broadside map of the Bastille published as part of Palloy's brilliant contemporane…ous merchandising of the French Revolution. Palloy recognized the significance of the Bastille as a symbol of the French Revolution. With the inspired idea that he would sell off the Bastille block by block, Palloy began demolishing the infamous prison on the night of its Storming. His entrepreneurship and promotional efforts not only made him rich, they also effectively cemented the Storming of the Bastille in the global imagination. The printed ephemera Palloy published to promote his demolition of the rebranding of the Bastille is thus of the utmost significance and rarity - this being just one of just 6 confirmed surviving examples. Palloy and the Bastille On the night of July 14, 1789, as the mob that stormed the Bastille moved on, the enterprising Palloy sent workers to the still-smoldering Bastille to begin demolition. Two days later, on the 16th, city electors formally awarded him the demolition contract. With nearly 1,000 workers on site daily for the subsequent 2 years, Palloy took apart the infamous prison block by block. Parisian society flocked to observe the historic work; among them, influential figures such as Honoré Gabriel Riqueti, Count of Mirabeau and Pierre Beaumarchais. Calling himself 'Palloy Patriote', he hosted grand balls on the prison's ruins, capitalizing on the public interest. Palloy let nothing go to waste - the stones, chains, and other parts of the prison were sold or given as souvenirs to government officials and the public. Among the items created were scale models of the Bastille (one of which he sent to each of the 83 newly created French Departments), medallions, dominoes, and card games. He even commissioned busts of Mirabeau and Rousseau carved from the Bastille's stonework. It has been estimated that Palloy produced some 25,000 medallions from the melted-down ironwork. Palloy's propagandistic promotion not only earned him a fortune, it cemented the Storming of the Bastille as a fundamental symbol of the French Revolution. A Closer Look The Bastille's 8 imposing towers dominate the image, each numerically indexed in the bottom corners. Over 36 locations are identified, with multiple shops, stables, and other locations keyed to the same number. Other identified locations include the library, the chapel, two drawbridges, the kitchens, and the governor's quarters. A short history of the Bastille written by Palloy occupies the space between the indexes. The Bastille The Bastille (officially known as the Bastille Saint-Antoine) was constructed between 1357 and 1380, during the Hundred Years' War (1337 - 1453), as a fortress to protect Paris's eastern approaches. It was an innovative design, with 8 towers overlooking Porte Saint-Antoine. Later, the fortress played a prominent role in French domestic conflicts, including the 15th-century Armagnac-Burgundian Civil War and the 16th-century Wars of Religion. The Bastille became a state prison in 1417, initially for nobility, but from 1659 as a general prison. 5,279 prisoners had been imprisoned in the Bastille by 1789. During the 18th century, the infamy of the Bastille grew as it became synonymous with oppressive government enforcement of political dissent. The Storming of the Bastille The Storming of the Bastille took place on July 14, 1789 (Bastille Day) at the outset of the French Revolution (1789 - 1799). After weeks of turmoil, tensions in Paris built toward a general riot, which the monarchy moved to put down. Parisians stormed the Hôtel des Invalides to capture the roughly 30,000 muskets stockpiled there. The mob discovered that the gunpowder had been moved to the Bastille for safer storage earlier that week. Thi.
