1882, New Edition (not a Print on Demand). xvi, folding Conspectus of the Presentation Order [complete, but in two pieces], 520pp, bound in brown cloth, new endpapers, ex-library from St. Joseph's Convent in Portland, Maine (now defunct). Previous ownership, with the signature of James Augustus Healy (1830-1900), first African American Roman Catholic Bishop. He presided over a diocese covering Maine and New Hampshire for 25 years. He was the son of an Irish Immigrant, Michael Healy, who became a properous plantation owner in Georgia, and a mulatto woman who was actually a slave. After ordination Father Healy was assigned to Bishop John Fitzpatrick's Boston Diocese, and finally became pastor of St. James Church in Boston. He was 45 years old when his appointment came to be the second Bishop of Portland, Maine. Because he was half Irish he bonded with the parishioners on Munjoy Hill, many of whom were recent arrivals from Ireland. He spoke fluent French, which endeared him to the Acadians of Northern Maine. Nano Nagle (c 1718-1784) was an Irish Catholic religious sister, who promoted Catholic education in Ireland, despite legal prohibitions to do so. She founded the Sisters of the Presentation of the Blessed Virgin Mary, and was declared Venerable on October 31, 2013 by Pope Francis.
