He achieved wide renown in the early 1980s as the author of The Postmodern Condition (La Condition Postmoderne), which quickly became a central text in postmodern theory. Yet, notwithstanding the importance of the analyses it offered of contemporary society and science, The Postmodern Condition was a short, occasional piece, commissioned by the Conseil de Universit?s of the gov- ernment of Quebec, and Lyotard was doubtless somewhat embarrassed by its success. Informing the text, but largely eclipsed by it at least outside of Lyotard's native France - there lay thirty years of profound engagement with the central philosophical and political problems of the latter part of the twentieth century. Thus whilst the popularity of The Postmodern Condition cast a shadow over Lyotard's other work, through it that work fundamentally influenced, and continues to influence, thinking in the humanities, arts and sciences, often in subtle and unacknowledged ways.
