He achieved wide renown in the early 1980s as the author of The Postmodern Condition (La Condition Postmoderne), which quickly became a central text in postmodern theory. Yet, notwithstanding the importance of the analyses it offered of contemporary society and science, The Postmodern Condition was a short, occasional piece, commissioned by the Conseil de Universit?s of the gov- ernment of Quebec, and Lyotard was doubtless somewhat embarrassed by its success. Informing the text, but largely eclipsed by it at least outside of Lyotard's native France - there lay thirty years of profound engagement with the central philosophical and political problems of the latter part of the twentieth century.
