Print on Demand. This book is a study of the early Latin translations of the New Testament, with a particular focus on the Codex Sangallensis. Latin bibles are important for understanding the history of the New Testament, and the author shows how the Codex Sangallensis presents a non-vulgate, African-influenced version of the Latin text. The author shows that this text is not a true Vulgate text and that it contains an older Latin element that ought not to be neglected. The book demonstrates that an "African" influence was a marked feature in some of the earliest Latin copies of the NT and that the early versions of the Latin text go back into a common origin, which we designate as the Great Western Bilingual; a recension which was freely colored both in Latin and in Greek by the Opinions prevailing in the second century. The study of these early texts offers a unique window into the genesis of the Western readings in the New Testament. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book.…

The following pages are of interest only to a very small circle of readers. They are concerned with the history and the develop ments of the early Latin translations of the New Testament; and form an appendix to my recent work on the Codex Bezae. If the results arrived at are somewhat scanty, I do not altogether feel free to withhold them; for the problems which they touch upon are important. Many people are still standing where Augustine stood when he implied that there had been an infinite number of translators of the Gospels. It is time that this position was abandoned, and a number of associated positions; and that we formed a right idea of the nature, time and place of production of the primitive Latin text from which all other Western texts are derived. Perhaps this tract may help some student towards the necessary rectification of his ideas.
