This drawback has in turn resulted in a paucity of ecological studies in this island. In order to remedy this situation the UNESCO Sri Lanka National Committee on Man and Biosphere functioning under the aegis of the National Science Foundation has been sponsoring the publication of checklists of species and handbooks to assist in the identification of Genera of various groups of plants and animals.
