Research Paper (undergraduate) from the year 2020 in the subject Sociology - Relationships and Family, , language: English, abstract: Therefore, this paper aims to utilize past studies and data to analyze the current function of gender roles in society. Gender roles have been present throughout history, dictating many aspects of human life such as deciding appropriate behavior and career choices. However, these stereotypes have evolved over the past few decades and there has been an increased concern regarding the influence of gender norms in modern society. In particular, the means by which is it learned and its role in forming gender inequality, occupational segregation, and prejudice. In addition to research involving the presence of gender roles in childhood and the media, the societal construct of appropriate behavior for women is analyzed, along with statistics regarding gender wage gaps, occupational segregation, and discriminatory biases. The results of this paper show that gender roles and stereotypes learned from childhood continue to be prevalent in society today through many outlets including family, media, and occupational choices.
