Journalist Jacob Riis wrote his autobiography, The Making of an American, in 1901, a personal story about his and America's past: his early life in Denmark, his struggles as an immigrant in the United States, and how he took advantage of the opportunities offered in America.

Acerca del autor
JACOB A. RIIS (1849-1914), a Danish immigrant who arrived in New York in 1870, became a newspaper reporter and a social reformer. Having experienced poverty firsthand, he explored the social conditions of the New York poor in articles and books, such as in How the Other Half Lives and The Battle with the Slum. He was also a social documentary photographer who became famous for his early adoption of flash in photography.
