9781585624362: Normal Child and Adolescent Development: A Psychodynamic Primer

Video Included! Unique in its integrative approach, Normal Child and Adolescent Development: A Psychodynamic Primer is a thorough introduction to how development unfolds as a complex transactional process progressing through the first three decades of life. The book traces development from the prenatal period to emerging adulthood and embraces a nonlinear multisystem approach while maintaining the touchstones of traditional developmental phases. The authors maintain that all dynamically oriented practitioners use developmental theories as a framework for understanding their patients and for helping their patients understand themselves. A developmental scaffolding organizes the complexity of each patient's life story and supports the gradual process of psychodynamic exploration and meaning making. Illustrated with vibrant clinical vignettes and online video illustrations that exemplify the various developmental stages in a rich and easily recognizable way, Normal Child and Adolescent Development: A Psychodynamic Primer is the only available text on human development from a psychodynamic point of view, and thus fills a critical gap by providing a contemporary, integrative, and psychodynamic approach to development.

About the Author:

Karen Gilmore, M.D., is Clinical Professor of Psychiatry, Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons, and Senior Consultant, Columbia University Center for Psychoanalytic Training and Research. Pamela Meersand, Ph.D., is Assistant Professor of Psychology, Department of Psychiatry, Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons, and Director, Child Division, Columbia University Center for Psychoanalytic Training and Research.

Review:

Drs. Gilmore and Meersand have written far more than a simple primer of normal child and adolescent development. Their book is a tour de force, a sophisticated review of the child development literature from classical psychodynamic theories to a modern interactive, transactional approach. Disparate paradigms of genetic, cognitive, psychosexual, and psychosocial theories are woven together in a clear, integrative approach that does not throw out the baby of attachment theory with the bathwater of classical psychodynamics. This is a superb synthesis demonstrating that each individual is a complex product of endowment, environment, and particular relationships ... a must for all those interested in human development. --Clarice J. Kestenbaum, M.D., Director of Training Emerita and Professor of Clinical Psychiatry, Columbia University College of Physicians & Surgeons, New York, NY

Gilmore and Meersand have succeeded in the Herculean task of articulating a coherent psychodynamic account of development from birth through early adulthood. Weaving together the threads and hints that permeate classic and contemporary psychoanalytic theories with current research findings and illustrative vignettes, the authors offer a depiction of psychological development infused with the sensibility and wisdom of an integrative psychoanalytic framework which takes account of multiple internal and external forces on development. Their objective is to enhance the ability of psychoanalytic clinicians to make use of developmental notions in clinical work with individuals of all ages. Written in a lively and engaging style, their volume achieves this goal with eminent success. --Jeanine M. Vivona, Ph.D., Professor of Psychology; The College of New Jersey, Ewing, NJ

Descripción American Psychiatric Association Publishing, United States, 2013. Paperback. Estado de conservación: New. Language: English . Brand New Book. Normal Child and Adolescent Development: A Psychodynamic Primer presents a complete picture of mental development, informed by contemporary research and psychodynamic thinking. Dr. Gilmore and Dr. Meersand have taught human development to psychiatric residents, psychology doctoral students, and psychoanalytic candidates for more than a decade, and found an acute need for accessible material integrating recent findings in the psychodynamic literature and psychology research with information on development as a dynamic interaction of the growing mind (including the unconscious mind), the maturing body, and the evolving demands of environment. The book is their response to this need, and it is as unique as it is useful, as compelling as it is comprehensive.Replete with new ideas and fascinating connections, the volume is also beautifully written and a pleasure to read. The clinical vignettes in the text are vivid narratives that make the child at different stages recognizable and memorable. In addition, online video illustrations reinforce the key characteristics at each phase of normal development. In brief:  The authors begin with an introduction to the book s theoretical orientation and end with a brief reprise of the importance of developmental thinking in clinical practice, forming a clear framework for the authors perspective. The authors use familiar developmental demarcations, informed by current thinking, to present chapters on infancy, toddlerhood, oedipal age, latency, preadolescence, early and mid-adolescence, late adolescence, and the still-controversial phase of emerging adulthood. The section on the oedipal-age child merits two chapters, testament to the authors belief in the critical nature of this phase, which marks a momentous transition in mental development. Grounded in the belief that an understanding of development is a building block of clinical thinking, the book emphasizes that every patient encounter demands familiarity with developmental concepts, as well as the understanding that past and present are inextricably woven together, and that present consciousness is an amalgam of all experience. The book s multisystem approach shows the complexity and diversity of human development. Truly, Normal Child and Adolescent Development: A Psychodynamic Primer is a twenty-first century text, and one that both students and practitioners in psychiatry, psychology, and psychoanalysis will welcome as a valuable resource.
