The softcover uncorrected proof, inscribed on the title page: "For Annie [Dillard], who started me on the journey that mattered. Alexander Chee." With Dillard's bookplate on the half-title page. This is Chee's first book, a novel, uncommon signed. Critically acclaimed, it won the Asian American Writers Workshop Literary Award, the Lambda Editor's Choice Prize, and the Michener/Copernicus Fellowship Prize. This association is particularly compelling because Dillard was Chee's teacher at Wesleyan, and in Chee's acclaimed How to Write An Autobiographical Novel (2018), he devotes a 14-page essay to her and his experience as her student, "The Writing Life" (the essay's title an homage to Dillard's book on writing, The Writing Life). To sample the long essay: "At the beginning of class she would unpack the long, thin thermos of coffee and the bag of Brach's singly wrapped caramels--the ones with the white centers. She would set down her legal pad covered in notes and pour the coffee, which she would drink as she unwrapped the caramels and ate them. . The wrappers would flutter a little as she whipped the pages of her legal pad back and forth, and spoke in epigrams about writing that often led to short lectures but were sometimes lists: Don't eve uses the word 'soul,' if possible. Never quote dialogue you can summarize. Avoid describing crowd scenes, especially party scenes" (47-48). Nearer the conclusion, he writes, "By the time I was done studying with Annie, I wanted to be her." Chee's essay itself is a master class in good writing and a precise glimpse into Dillard's mind and teaching. He has gone on to win a Whiting Award and Guggenheim among other honors. The uncorrected proof is very good with edge wear and rubbing to spine edges, one bump and crease to lower front corner. A copy of How to Write An Autobiographical Novel is included here, a fine paperback original.
