Sinopsis

"The safest general characterization of the European philosophical tradition is that it consists of a series of footnotes to Plato." - Alfred North Whitehead

Plato's ideas on reason, justice, and religion have had profound impact on Western philosophy and politics. This box set containing five books collects some of his most celebrated writings, including his iconic work The Republic. These Ancient Greek dialogues are written as conversations between Plato's mentor Socrates and various Athenian citizens, covering vast range of topics including the construction of communities, immortality of the soul, temperance, rhetoric and virtue. His writings have been studied for hundreds of years and yet remain strikingly pertinent in the modern world.

Includes:
• Gorgias
• Protagoras and Other Dialogues on Human Virtue
• The Dialogues of Socrates
• The Republic
• Timaeus and Critias

Acerca del autor

Plato was born in Athens in 428 BC. The ancient Greek philosopher was one of the most important thinkers in the history of the Western hemisphere. His work covered themes as broad as politics, virtue, love, art and literature. He was also the first person to mention the lost city of Atlantis, which he claimed was sunk by the Gods in revenge for its attempt to attack Athens.

Benjamin Jowett (1817-1893) was a British classical scholar and master of Balliol College, Oxford, who became renowned for his translations of Plato.
