A manuscript from which this book was finally made was prepared about three years ago to supplement the author's book The Teaching of Arithmetic for his students who were preparing for work in the primary grades. Copies of the manuscript were used for reference by the author's students in the summer sessions of The Cleveland School of Education, and for a year or more the book was used in manuscript form by primary super visors in several schools. Many Of those using the manu script have urged the author to publish it in book form. It is Ofiered, then, in the belief that the methods and devices will help the teacher in planning her work, and thus help the pupil to get a proper training as well as pleasure in his work.
