Excerpt from I/S Design Team Performance: A Control Theory Perspective
The increased use of information technology as a key element of strategy has been well documented (bakos and Treacy 1986, Cash and Konsynski 1985, Ives and Learmonth 1984, Parsons 1983, Rockart and Scott Morton And yet, the ability to effectively manage the development of information systems (i/s) still represents a significant challenge. Kemerer for example, noted that backlogs in US have been increased substantially over the last decade and a high percentage of systems finish over budget and late. In this paper we examine the performance of US design teams from the perspective of control theory.

Paperback. Condición: New. Print on Demand. This book explores the relationship between project managers and their teams within contemporary information system design, employing control theory to develop quantifiable data on organizational characteristics and performance. The author argues for a perspective of control that incorporates both managerial control and collegial control. Through real-world case studies and statistical analysis, this book sheds light on the complexities of IS design teams and offers a new model for effective management. Emphasizing the importance of strong managerial control alongside team member control, the book challenges traditional top-down management approaches and highlights the significance of self-control and peer influence in team dynamics. The author's findings reveal that successful US design teams exhibit both strong process control by managers and strong outcome control by team members, suggesting a nuanced and collaborative approach to project management. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format.
