Excerpt from Standard Methods of Chemical Analysis, Vol. 1
In the first division the elements are generally taken up in their alphabetical order, each chapter being fairly complete in itself, cross-references being given to certain details included elsewhere to avoid repetition. For example, the complete di rections for separation of the halogens are given in the chapter on chlorine, and references to these details are given in the chap ters dealing with the other members of this group. Occasionally it has been deemed advisable to place several related elements together in the same chapter.
Each chapter on the elements is generally arranged according to the following outline.

Excerpt from Standard Methods of Chemical Analysis, Vol. 1
The third edition of Standard Methods of Chemical Analysis appears in two volumes as the amount of new material makes it advisable to divide the work. Volume 1 includes the material in Part 1 and Part 3 of the original text. Volume 2 includes the chapters of Part 2 and has in addition several new chapters.
The entire work has undergone revision, certain sections being rewritten, additions made and portions rearranged. The chapter on assaying has been placed after silver in Volume 1. The conversion factors in the section of useful data have been revised to conform to the atomic weights of 1920. The columns have been rearranged, the factors being placed next to the formula to which they apply. The chapter on acidimetry and alkalimetry is an expansion of the former chapter on acids; this introduces Volume 2. In this volume appear several new chapters.
