Sinopsis

Excerpt from Goal Setting and Self-Directed Behavior Change

Two recent developments, one theoretical and one practical, have led behavior change researchers to pay more attention to self-directed techniques of behavior change. In practice, there is a growing demand for behavioral science solutions to human problems. More and more individuals are seeing that the various forms of psychotherapy can provide viable solutions to their personal problems. In addition, social welfare agencies are seeking to change their role from that of policeman and distributor of government funds to that of an agent for individual and community development. This growing demand for the practical application of behavioral science knowledge has made prae ticioners painfully aware of the fact that, using the existing techniques of behavior change which are so dependent on the change agent [or their success, there can never be enough professionally trained personnel to meet this demand. So in desperation the practicioner is asking, How crucial am I in the change process? Is is possible to develop change techniques that people can use themselves?

Paperback. Condición: New. Print on Demand. This book delves into the fascinating realm of self-directed behavior change, exploring the potential for individuals to actively shape their own destinies. Challenging traditional therapeutic models that cast patients as passive recipients of treatment, the author advocates for a more proactive approach, drawing upon insights from psychology, management theory, and even etymology. The author traces the historical shift in psychological thought from reactive theories, emphasizing external control over behavior, to a recognition of the human capacity for self-determination. This book explores the power of conscious goal-setting, drawing upon the works of William James and others, to illustrate how focused attention and willpower can drive behavior change. Readers will discover a framework for self-directed change, encompassing key elements such as goal awareness, expectation of success, psychological safety, and self-evaluation. The book also examines the dynamics of the goal-setting process and identifies specific characteristics associated with successful goal achievement. Ultimately, this book empowers individuals to take control of their personal growth journeys, offering practical insights and strategies for harnessing the power of self-direction to achieve lasting and meaningful change. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format.
