Sinopsis
This reference text provides a comprehensive integration of research literature on physical ageing. The author reviews and sythesizes research data, concepts, theories and interpretations from a variety of disciplines, including physiology, psychology, medicine, sports medicine, gerontology, and other specialized fields. The integrated approach aims to enable readers to apply a broad perspective to their work, identify important research on ageing, and gain a greater appreciation of the impact of physical activity on ageing. The first three chapters introduce basic concepts of ageing, and emphasize individual differences in the ageing process. The rest of the book addresses the interdependence of physical health, mental function, emotional control, and self-esteem at every level of physical performance, from that of the frail elderly to senior Olympians. A final chapter on elite athletes offers an insight into the physical potential of older adults.
