8vo; original pictorial boards; pp. xix + (i) + 560, incl. index; several maps, incl. folding; photographs; line drawings; tables. Quite foxed to boards and endpapers, occasional fox spot elsewhere; gift inscription to front free endpaper. Good condition. The contributions are placed under the general headings 'The Environment', 'Plant Studies', 'Invertebrate Studies', 'Vertebrate Studies', 'Ecosystem Studies', and 'Human Studies and the Future'. The dune forests of Maputaland, its corals and marine fishes, marine turtles, crocodiles and birds receive deserved attention. "The assembly of a collection of papers dealing with such an array of subjects, from Anthicid beetles via the wetlands and coastal waters to the elephants of the Mosi-Sihangwane savanna, is a formidable task in its own right, but by attempting this, the editors and their contributors have shown how complex and sensitive the environment of Maputaland really is." - From the Preface.
