Hardcover. Condición: Fine. Estado de la sobrecubierta: Fine. Hardcover. Bound in brown cloth with gilt publishers mark on the cover. Gilt text on the spine. Born in Scotland of English parents, Shaw was ordained as a Methodist chaplain to the Sephton party, one of the many organized groups that made up the 1820 English settler movement in the eastern Cape Colony of what is now South Africa. He was appointed to the white settlers but also to further mission among the indigenous peoples. He spent his first three years building up a strong Methodist church in the new settler community, which by 1824 counted twelve congregations. A strong settler church, he insisted, was the essential base for a mission to the African peoples. It was not until 1824 that work began among the neighboring Xhosa-speaking population, though Methodist success was not primarily among the Xhosa but among the Mfengu refugees driven from their lands by the Zulu. This linking of the settler and mission churches set a course that resulted in twentieth-century Methodism in South Africa being one church. However, in Shaw?s lifetime it produced great tension, since too often funds from England were swallowed up in keeping the settler base strong. Also, in the terrible period of bloody conflict with the Xhosa between 1834 and 1852, Shaw appeared as a spokesman of the settlers. However, it was also true that he fought for the African education against settler opinion and always criticized gross injustice. Having retired to England in 1856, he was still concerned for South Africa and in 1860 proposed that an autonomous South African Methodist Conference be established, but the Methodist authorities in Britain refused approval. He retired from the active ministry in 1869. 220pp.CONDITION: Covers are unmarked. Pages are crisp and clean. Binding and text block are sound. Full refund if not satisfied.…

233 x 158 mm; card wrappers; pp. xviii + (iv) + 191 + (i); some photographs and facsimiles. Wrappers worn; library stamps and codes; some damp-staining. Fair. "Anyone interested in biographical material by Africans in South Africa is well aware of its virtual non-existence. There are a handful of books which treat the lives of wellknown personalities . Even rarer are publications by individuals who have lived their lives in virtual anonymity. The result is a tremendous void in that we have no retrospective view of how a common man has viewed his life, acquaintances and - of particular significance in South Africa - the impact on him of a racialist society. I believe these reminiscences by Joseph Coko are a positive contribution to filling this void. . During his youth at the turn of the century, he developed close relationships with the Xhosa-speaking men who worked with his father, and he took every opportunity to enquire into the traditions of his own people, the amaXhosa. He was fascinated by the stories of his ancestors, their language, history, customs and superstitions. This particular interest, along with his facility in English, gave him a reputation amongst both Africans and Europeans as a person who could valuably criticize their efforts when they wrote or translated from each other's languages.".…

"James Butler - grandfather of the poet and professor Guy Butler - arrived in the Eastern Cape in 1876 as a sickly twenty-two-year old Londoner recuperating from a serious illness. He stayed for two and a half years, during a time of impending frontier war. In a journal he kept for his family back home, 'Jim' Butler, Quaker, teetotaller and later newspaper editor, recorded in down-to-earth fashion the daily life, politics, natural history and social encounters of this far-off corner of the colonies. 'Jim's Journal' has been re-edited and voluminously annotated for publication by Jane Garner.". …

"Eliza Sophia Pigot, daughter of an 1820 Settler leader, spent her childhood in comfortable circumstances in England. After her family immigrated she shared the experiences of a pioneer community, brought unsuspectingly to South Africa to form a barrier between advancing African tribes and long-established districts in the Western Cape. In 1824 she married Donald Moodie, one of three talented brothers from Orkney; she bore him fourteen children, and his career took them successively to the Kowie, Graham's Town, Graaff Reinet, Cape Town and Natal. The Journal in which Sophia Pigot records her voyage to the Cape, and the first phase of the Settlement in Albany, though recorded by scholars, has not been published before. Other diaries which she kept have been discovered recently, and these, with family letters and personal memoranda, constitute a record of an eventful life, and a character study of a dynamic, humorous and courageous woman.".…

Occasional Paper Number Twenty-Six, Institute of Social and Economic Research. 226 x 158 mm; pictorial wrappers; pp. iv + 56. Slightly rubbed; occasional fox spot. Good to very good condition. "The Gcaleka people of the Transkei speak of going out to work in the urban-industrial centres of South Africa as going to 'war' and celebrate the return of a migrant worker with joy and thanksgiving. One of the rituals which marks return is a beer drink called umsindleko. In this study umsindleko is examined within the context of a series of ritual events associated with labour migration, and against a background of economic dependence on the earnings of migrant workers. Drawing extensively on the skilful oratory performed at umsindleko the relationship between Gcaleka society and the world of wage employment is explored, in an attempt to illustrate the 'meaning' of labour migration to the people involved in it.".…
