The latter include heart failure, hypertension, cardiac hypertrophy, interstitial fibrosis, post-myocardial infarction remodeling, contractile dysfunction and vascular injury. Recent studies have shown that the heart possesses an intrinsic renin angiotensin system that is controlled by tissue-specific parameters activated by biomechanical stress.
