Carbanion Chemistry: Structures and Mechanisms explores the chemistry of these important anionic organic intermediates which are central to organic synthetic reactions from the aldol, Knoevenangel and Claisen condensations to enolate and other carbanion alkylations. Written for researchers and graduate students in organic chemistry, the approach is to consider the basics of carbanion structure, including stereochemistry, the influence of counterions and aggregation, as well as the substituent effects on stability and reactivity so as to explore the full range of behaviour of these species. Chapters on the spectroscopy of the arylmethyl carbanions and on carbanion reactions promoted by alkaline solids highlight specific areas and will be of interest to practising physical and synthetic organic chemists and chemical engineers who seek low- or no-solvent "green chemistry" ideas.
