Sinopsis
Spoon is a definitive view of new product design, presenting the work of 100 exceptional designers who have emerged on an international platform as recently as the last five years: these are selected by 10 critics, designers and entrepreneurs who are universally respected for their informed opinion on the international contemporary design scene. This book provides provides a unique opportunity to explore a diverse collection of recent design projects: furniture, lighting, tools, utensils, high-tech products, machinery and so on. The designers are listed in alphabetical order, featuring two double-page spreads for each. Fresh, exemplary products are brought to life by sketches, drawings, computer renderings, model and prototypes that help to explain, together with the extensive captions, the process behind each project. Short analytical texts by the curators explains the designers' works and the characteristics that make their projects forward-looking and groundbreaking. Spoon also features, at the end of the book, 10 'classic' industrially manufactured product designs, chosen by the curators as best examples of the 'good design'. These 'classics' are accompanied by the curators' respective explanations of their choice of designers and their concept of 'good design'. Spoon takes its place in a unique series of surveys identifying 100 of the most interesting, cutting-edge practitioners of key art forms. Parallel surveys include cream and Fresh Cream (contemporary art), BLINK. (photography), and 10 x 10 and 10 x 10_2 (architecture). Ultan Guilfoyle is Director of Film & Video Production at the Solomon R Guggenheim Museum, New York and was Curator of the landmark travelling exhibition 'The Art of the Motorcycle' (1998).
Brooke Hodge is Curator of Architecture and Design at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Los Angeles.
Laura Houseley is Architecture and Design Editor at Wallpaper* magazine.
Hansjerg Maier-Aichen was the founder of Authentics plastic manufacturer and is Professor of Product Design at the Hochschule für Gestaltung, Karlsruhe.

The selected designers are presented in alphabetical order with an introductory text written by the curators who chose them. The curators were also requested to pick a 'design classic', which they think best exemplifies the concept of'good design'. These 'classics' are illustrated at the end of the book and are accompanied by a text in which the curators discuss these icons of design. The designers featured in Spoon cover every field of industrial design and come from a wide variety of countries and backgrounds. Some are very young and have just started to have projects manufactured industrially. Others have worked in related disciplines and have only recently started to do product design. Working in a field that explores new technologies but at the same time renews established techniques, the designers have very different approaches to their projects: some draw sketches that the manufacturer transforms into products, others supply precise technical drawings and computer renderings, while still others work only with three dimensional models. The final object is the last stage of a long process that starts with the designer's creativity and is developed in the manufacturer's workshop through trial and error. Spoon illustrates some of the drawings or prototypes, together with the finished products, to give an idea of that production process. All of the designers selected have had products industrially manufactured. Certain common themes emerge in the work of the selected designers. For example, many of the designers are concerned about ecology and the benefits of recycling. Some of them have chosen to use materials and techniques that are non-polluting, while others have created objects with components that can be easily dismantled for recycling, or they have designed products that are intended to help us behave in a more ecologically friendly way.
