Very proud they were of him; very confident that some day he would be a great writer. Of course this newspaper work was to be only the beginning. Unhappily, the family estate was depleted, and at present there was no hope of college. None of his sisters were old enough to be wage earners, and his father had left them little except the homestead. The boy's salary, meager as it was, helped immensely.
