Max. A Biography

Soft cover. Condición: Very Good. Reprint. Paperback. Max. Slight crease to corner back cover. Like Dr. Johnson and Oscar Wilde, Max Beerbohm is equally famous as an artist and as a public personality; England's supreme parodist and cartoonist and also the leading wit and dandy of the Edwardian age. But waht lay behind the urbane, ironic mask he showed to the world? The author is the first writer to try and tell us; for Max, who knew him, appointed him his biographer, and he is the first person to have access to Max's fascinating private papers. The result is an intimate portrait of an odd, brilliant and most lovable human being, who was also a deeper and more considerable character tha n his appearance might suggest. Besides being a picture of a man, this book is the picture of an age. In it the literary, theatrical and fashionable worlds of the 'nineties and of Edward VII's reign - the world of Wilde and Shaw and Henry James and 'The Souls' - appears in vivid detail before us as seen through Max's amused and penetrating eyes. He knew everyone worth knowing in that era and had something to say about each of them.
