Descripción del artículo del vendedor

[24], 148, [2], 14pp. Recent black cloth, lettered in gilt. Very minor wear to extremities. Recent endpapers, presentation bookplate to FEP; 'This Volume forms part of the Tottenham Library, which was purchased by general subscription, as a testimonial to the memory of the late Revd. Edward Tottenham, B.D., to be held in perpetual trust for the public benefit of the City of Bath. December, 1853', recent book-label and ink shelf-marks of the 'Bath Reference Library' to FFEP, ink ownership inscription to title; 'Edwd. Tottenham / 1832 / Nottingham', short strip of clear tape to head of title, slight marginal loss to lower corner of Y3, occasional creasing, light dust-soiling, spotting. A reply, by Church of England clergyman and religious controversialist Peter Du Moulin (1601-1684), to Philanax Anglicus, or, a Christian caveat (1663). First printed in 1664, the work seeks to bolster the position of the restored Protestant Church through proclamations of devotion to the sovereign, whilst directly challenging British Catholics to confront the consequences of their loyalty to the papacy. Edward Tottenham (1810-1853), Irish clergyman, graduate of Trinity College, Dublin, who served successively as minister for Kensington Chapel, Bath, Curate of Laura Chapel, Bath, and, from 1841, as a Prebendary of Wells. Tottenham devoted himself to the scholarly study of the Roman Catholic Church and liturgy, which he perceived to be corrupted; his book collection, purchased by the Bath Reference Library upon his death, well reflected this sentiment. ESTC R5513, Wing D2574A. Size: Quarto.

Descripción de la tienda

Established 2007, Antiquates Ltd is an Antiquarian bookseller with a large, custom built shop in the heart of the Dorset countryside. We sell fine and rare books from our Wareham shop, in catalogues, and via our website (www.antiquates.co.uk). Specialising in early printed books both English and Continental, fine English Literature, and books by, for, and about Women and Children, we nevertheless stock a wide range of works on paper from 1500-present - including modern first editions. Our bias is towards the unusual, the interesting and the important - and always have a good stock of rare books by local authors such as T.E. Lawrence and Thomas Hardy; we are just the place if you're looking for an extra-special gift for a wedding, birthday, anniversary or graduation. (Open Wednesday - Saturday, 10am-4pm)
