Paperback. What if Martin Luther could tell you about his God - in his own voice, from his own heart? Not the Luther of the monuments - the hammer, the theses, the defiant stand at Worms. The real Luther. The one who lay on the floor of an Augustinian monastery in Erfurt, having prayed every prayer and kept every fast and confessed every sin he could find, and still could not find peace. The one who hated a phrase in Romans until the day it broke him open and changed the world. This is that Luther. Blunt, urgent, and utterly convinced. Speaking to you about the God he nearly missed - and about the discovery that made the missing impossible to keep quiet about. In these pages, Luther speaks about the thunderstorm at Stotternheim - the lightning bolt that threw him to the ground and drove him into the monastery, and why the terror of that moment was not wrong but necessary. He speaks about the Anfechtungen - the attacks of spiritual darkness that the monastery could not cure - and about the floor that holds when everything else gives way. About the phrase in Romans 1:17 that he hated for years and that, when it finally opened, felt like the gates of paradise swinging wide. About grace alone, faith alone, Scripture alone - not as slogans but as the blood-tested discoveries of a man who had tried every alternative and found them all insufficient. He also speaks about the law and the gospel - the distinction he called the most important in all of theology. About the hidden God and the revealed God. About the devil, who was very real to him. About the priesthood of every believer. About prayer, translation, Worms, and the Wartburg. What readers will find inside: The thunderstorm - terror as the beginning of wisdomThe Anfechtungen - the floor that holds in the darkRomans 1:17 - the discovery that changed everythingGrace alone - why human merit is the gospel's greatest enemyThe alien righteousness - the great exchange at the crossLaw and gospel - the distinction that sets the captive freeHere I stand - Worms, conscience, and the Word of GodA mighty fortress - the God who holds when everything shakesThis book is for every person who has tried to earn what can only be received. For anyone who has performed the religious duties and still could not find peace. For the soul standing before God with full hands who has not yet discovered that the gift only fits empty ones.Luther will not let you stay comfortable. That was never his way.Come with empty hands. Not the Luther of the monuments — the hammer, the theses, the defiant stand at Worms.
Speaking to you about the God he nearly missed — and about the discovery that made the missing impossible to keep quiet about.
In these pages, Luther speaks about the thunderstorm at Stotternheim — the lightning bolt that threw him to the ground and drove him into the monastery, and why the terror of that moment was not wrong but necessary. He speaks about the Anfechtungen — the attacks of spiritual darkness that the monastery could not cure — and about the floor that holds when everything else gives way. About the phrase in Romans 1:17 that he hated for years and that, when it finally opened, felt like the gates of paradise swinging wide. About grace alone, faith alone, Scripture alone — not as slogans but as the blood-tested discoveries of a man who had tried every alternative and found them all insufficient.
He also speaks about the law and the gospel — the distinction he called the most important in all of theology. About the hidden God and the revealed God. About the devil, who was very real to him. About the priesthood of every believer. About prayer, translation, Worms, and the Wartburg.
What readers will find inside:
- The thunderstorm — terror as the beginning of wisdom
- The Anfechtungen — the floor that holds in the dark
- Romans 1:17 — the discovery that changed everything
- Grace alone — why human merit is the gospel's greatest enemy
- The alien righteousness — the great exchange at the cross
- Law and gospel — the distinction that sets the captive free
- Here I stand — Worms, conscience, and the Word of God
- A mighty fortress — the God who holds when everything shakes
This book is for every person who has tried to earn what can only be received. For anyone who has performed the religious duties and still could not find peace. For the soul standing before God with full hands who has not yet discovered that the gift only fits empty ones.
Luther will not let you stay comfortable. That was never his way.
Come with empty hands. That is the whole of it.
