Descripción
pp3-6 only, from an issue of La Vanguardia, featuring the self-contained, illustrated centre page story of Ibn Saud's War in Arabia (pp4-5). Very good, tanned, folded, with some annotations to p3. Written by Augusto Assia (1904-2002), who was at this time La Vanguardia's correspondent in London, having been expelled from Nazi Germany the previous year. This covers the outbreak of the Saudi-Yemeni War (March 1934), and events leading up to that, with some contextual notes and impressions on the history of the Arabs. Ibn Saud is leading an army of 10,000, leaving Emir Faisal to govern in Mecca. He describes Britain's role, and presents the British view that favours Imam Yahya, that Yemeni riflemen are invincible in the mountains, but that the Bedouin guerillas possess courage capable of anything. Two of the 8 photos feature Ibn Saud, one reconnoitreing the front by car, the other with his general staff (the Saudi Ministry of Information recently alternatively attributed these to him receiving Amin Rihani at Jeddah airport in 1926, and in Riyadh in 1922 respectively, in Abd al Aziz Ibn Saud - A Life in Pictures). The other photos show a Yemeni encampment, fortifications at Hofuf, the Great Mosque during Hajj, the Ikhwan, a camel rider, and the Hejaz Railway. N° de ref. del artículo 4993
