From the preface to the catalogue "In later days, probably the most prominent of the occupiers of Frognal was Thomas Townshend, the first Earl Sydney, who was Leader of the House of Commons in 1783, and whose cousin, Charles Townshend, was the Chancellor of the Exchequer whose Stamp Act brought about the American Revolution. Thomas Townshend took a prominent part in arranging the terms of peace with America, and, on the fall of the Government, the King raised him to the Peerage. His daughter married Lord Chatham, elder brother of William Pitt. A year after Townshend s elevation to the Peerage as Viscount Sydney, having succeeded Shelburne at the Home Office which in those days had the control of the Colonies, the newly discovered harbour of Sydney in Australia was named after the Minister. Some interesting contemporary views of Sydney, at Frognal, afford a striking contrast to the Sydney of to-day. The Library is enriched by many important Holograph Letters of the King and the Cabinet on American affairs. Many generations of the Townshends, and their connections, have contributed to the extensive and well-known Library at Frognal, which is unusually rich in Tracts on America. The remarkable Fourteenth Century Horae in the Library, which appears to have been bound up in the reign of Henry VIII, contains considerable details of the Family Pedigree.". Copy No. 509.
