First impression of the true first edition. Illustrated with a monochrome frontispiece showing 'The west front of the Minster. The Towers attributed to William Hyndley (1466-1505)' and monochrome photographic illustrations throughout. With a beautiful jacket illustration by Brian Cook. Published in "The British Cities and Towns" series. ***Very good in blue cloth-covered boards with gilt titles and rules to the spine [the book is also found with red cloth-covered boards with black titles and rules to the spine]. The boards are nice and clean and unmarked. No bumps or creasing. Corners sharp. The page block edges are foxed, and there is some internal foxing also, mainly to the first and last few pages. No inscriptions. No internal creasing. ***In a very good colour illustrated dustwrapper, which retains the original publisher's printed price of 8s. 6d. net at the top corner of the front flap. The dustwrapper is complete, with just the very lightest edge-wear and rubbing. There is some discolouration and light marks to the dustwrapper, especially to the spine. No tears. No chips. With a beautiful illustration by Brian Cook to the front panel. ***190mm x 130mm. vi prelim pages plus 94 pages including an Index at the back of the book. ***Contents: Preface, Acknowledgment, Plan of York, Bibliography, Chapter I. York, the Capital City, II. York and the Invaders, III. Mediaeval York: the Capital of the North, IV. Mediaeval York: the Church Triumphant, V. Tudor York, VI. Stuart York, VII. York in the Eighteenth Century, VIII. York in the Nineteenth Century and To-day, Index. ***'Ever since the time of the Romans York has remained one of the most important cities in Britain. As a Capital and as an ecclesiastical centre the City has had a long and varied history whose richness has at every period been reflected in the quality and profusion of its buildings. In this book, John Rodgers, author, administrator and Member of Parliament, who was born and bred in and around York, has written a lively introduction to its history and architecture. Like the other books in the same series "York" is magnificently illustrated. There is a map of the town, a plan of the Minster, and a collection of more than 50 photographs and prints of York's matchless streets and buildings. It is the hope of the author and of his publishers that the book will appeal particularly to visitors, and that the citizens of York also may find in it a not unworthy record of their city." (Quote taken from the front flap of the dustwrapper). ***'Batsford was founded in 1843 by Bradley Thomas Batsford. Harry Batsford, nephew of the founder, was the chairman but also an author for the company writing at least 11 books on English architecture and countryside (some reprinted into the 21st century). Many were co-authored by Charles Fry, Chief Editor and a director of the company. A prominent chairman of the firm from 1952 until 1974 was Brian Batsford, known as Brian Cook, who joined in 1928, and designed many of its dust-jackets. Notable series in past years have included The Face of Britain series, The British Heritage Series, and The English Life Series.' (Wiki) ***First impression of the true first edition. One of the wonderfully produced Batsford books, this in the "British Cities and Towns" series, with the beautiful Brian Cook designed dustwrapper. ***For all our books, postage is charged at cost, allowing for packaging: any shipping rates indicated on ABE are an average only: we will reduce the P & P charge where appropriate - please contact us for postal rates for heavier books and sets etc.…
