THE RARE AND TRUE FIRST EDITION - A FINE COPY IN A LIKE COMPLETE DUST JACKET : this book has an unusual publication history. It was also published by the History press in the same year as my copy. The title page verso provides a clear indication that the book here and for sale is indeed the premier copy, the first published edition [ conforms with the Bodleian Library copy ] Not only that, it is a superb example in a similar dust jacket. xviii, 189 pages. Includes index. Summary : As a distinguished diplomat and for ten years the Queen's widely respected Press Secretary, Michael Shea had a privileged insight into the lives of the truly famous and powerful. In this book, he interweaves personal experience, anecdote and reflection to create a different perspective on recent history and on the celebrated individuals who have ástrutted their stuff on the public stage over the last forty years'. Taking as his framework diplomatic postings to Berlin, Ghana, Bonn, Bucharest and New York, and later his unexpected secondment to Buckingham Palace, Shea regales us with vivid behind-the-scenes encounters with awesome dictators like Nicolae Ceaucescu as well as minor tyrants like media magnate Robert Maxwell; spies and counter-spies in a Cold War Europe straight out of Le Carre; glittering banquets with US presidents and desert potentates; and the pleasures and perils of áminding' the great and the good, from Harold Wilson to Princess Diana, from Margaret Thatcher to the Queen. We remember the famous and the infamous for their great public moments but, as Michael Shea demonstrates, it is the tiny incidents, the facial expression or remark caught off camera, that really define the wisdom or weakness of those who have impressed or shocked us. Witty and incisive, A View from the Sidelines takes us right up close to our icons, sometimes revealing their feet of clay. [ SJ ].…

The great and the good, the powerful and the feared end up, to misquote Enoch Powell, "lonely, bitter and alone at home". In A View from the Sidelines, Michael Shea offers a behind-the-scenes account of his years with presidents, monarchs, captains of industry, film stars, secret agents and their hangers-on.

Descripción de la tienda
I have collected books most of my life. My collection has reduced now to about 4,000 items. I list a few more as time goes by! It is difficult sometimes to allow old friends to move on. Of course, they can find fresh enthusiasm from their new owners. No matter how many items you handle, there's always excitement and interest. It is vital however that my items are described accurately and I would hope to offer good value. If you see something that you feel is 'too high' for your pocket, don't hesitate to make me an offer. I try to keep the postage costs down, and within the United Kingdom this will be free. Posting abroad will be competitive, and often I will not ask for additional amounts if this is viable. But weight of items is the deciding factor. I will add images to my descriptions, and I hope that the combination will help you to decide. Regardless, always double check or take time to contact me for further information, or merely just to clarify a point. Ask for more images. If I can reduce anything I will do so. If you purchase more than one item, then offering a decent discount is likely. If items are not as described or you have a valid problem with any item, then I am happy to make a full or partial refund. This will be in line with all Statutory guidelines e.g returning the book in the condition it was delivered, and do let me know as quickly as possible. If damage has occurred then try to provide images. Ring me on 01352-810931…
