Descripción
8vo, pp. [iv], 82, [1] imprint, [1] blank; original printed green wrappers; mss inscription at head, dated 19 July 1806. First edition of this discussion of the economic importance of free trade and the impact of trade restrictions, published during the time of the continental blockade, by Leopold von Plessen (1769-1837). In the first part Plessen discusses the free development of trade, the impact of any state intervention, be it taxation or regulation, and the development of powerful trading nations. The second part deals more specifically with the impact of the Contintental Blockade, instituted by Napoleonic France to defeat England. Plessen argues that some parts of trade and industry might be improved by greater reliance on home production, that alternative supply routes might be developed, but in general maintains that a proper blockade is unsustainable and ultimately ineffective. Plessen (1769-1837), a Mecklenburg economist and politician, later represented Mecklenburg at the Congress of Vienna. This publication was apparently the first and only contribution to a projected series entitled Staatwirthschaftliche Ansichten. ADB XXVI, 272; Goldsmiths'-Kress 19244.15; Humpert 10163. N° de ref. del artículo 3640
