2 vols. Original boards, printed paper labels. Spines showing some wear (that of vol. i cracked), corners a little bumped, but a pleasing, fresh set. Six double-page engraved plates of music, one four-page spread; publisher's advertisement leaf (for a portrait engraving of the author) at end of vol. ii. "Choose such Foods [on the Continent] as you have found that your Stomach can digest easily - Nutritive, but not of a Heating nature, and so plainly dressed, that they cannot be adulterated: the Safest Foods are Eggs, plain boiled or roasted Meat, and Fruit: - touch not any of those Queer Compounds commonly ycleped Ragouts, Made Dishes, Puddings, Pies, &c. Above all, be on your guard against Soup and Wine. - Instead of Wine, it will often be better to drink Water, with the addition of one-eighth part of Brandy, which Travellers may carry with them. - 'The Oracle' declares, that if A Man is not a very fastidious Epicure, he need never fear Hunger or Languor, when he can get good Bread and Water - i.e. provided he carry with him a Brunswick Sausage and a Bottle of Brandy." The author, who died while this book was in the press, might well have described himself as an epicure; his most successful book was The Cook's Oracle (1817). He bills himself as William Kitchiner MD - though he had no degree; and, despite his oracular advice on foreign travel, had never ventured abroad.
