Descripción

Descripción:

Limited edition of 2000 numbered copies, signed by Prof Arber. 3 vols, cloth, gilt cover-titles, demy 4to, 30 cm, xvi, 576 + x, 664 + x, 742 pp. This is a large format reprint of the "Term Catalogues", a series of catalogues of new books that began in November 1668 and represent one of the earliest systematic attempts at a near-complete bibliographic record. After the first issue, the series continued at the rate of four issues a year until June 1709 (covering the reigns of Charles II, James II, William and Mary, and Anne) : the name "Term Catalogues" reflects the fact that issues appeared about the middle of each of the four law terms in the year. In all, the catalogues record about 20,000 editions of books for the 41 years during which they appeared, and as Arber claims "are a most wonderful survey and conspectus of a most stirring period of English history and literature - a period crowded with great thinkers, great writers, and great men of action". With title index, and author index, glossary and notes. Vol I: 1668-1682; Vol II: 1683-1696; Vol III: 1697-1709. Set No. B1082. An ex-library set with gilt spine-numbers, the elegant bookplate of the Athenaeum Library, Liverpool on the front pastedown endpapers, and less elegant stamp "De-accessioned and Withdrawn", barcode labels at feet of limitation pages, small library stamps at feet of title-pages, otherwise Near Very Good.
