The novel won second prize in the 1944 Thomas Jefferson Contest for Southern Writers and was first published in hardcover by E. P. Dutton in 1944. First Permabooks paperback edition (No. P227), published in Garden City, New York in 1953 by Permabooks, an imprint of Doubleday. McCoy was a Virginia novelist who devoted his brief bibliography, just four novels, to the close documentation of western Virginia Appalachian culture, securing a dedicated following among collectors of regional American fiction. This first Permabooks edition retains the distinctive green-stained text block edges characteristic of early 1950s Permabook production runs; surviving copies with vibrant unfaded green edge staining are increasingly uncommon in the secondary market.…
