Born in Herrick, Bradford County, Pennsylvania, in 1829, James Durand left the family homestead at the age of fifteen for New Orleans where he was educated and later employed as a bookkeeper until the outbreak of the Civil War. From 1861 until his death he held a position with the Treasury Department in Washington, D.C. before succumbing to ill health after the war.
