First edition thus, illustrated by Maurice Sendak, first impression. Ex university library, but with very discreet stamps and markings. Jacket quite tatty with bottom quarter of back jacket torn away, spine faded and abraded, some damp marking to back jacket, corners and folds rubbed with small loss, some time staining to back jacket and endpapers, some faint spotting and yellowing to page block. Not price clipped ($3.95), no personal inscriptions, internally clean tight and square, overall a reasonable copy for its age. 128pp, illustrated. Hans Christian Andersen (1805-75), born in Denmark, practically invented the writing of the adventure fairy tale, or fantastic tale. Although he wrote a broad range of work, including plays, travelogues, novels, and poems, it was his fairy tales that became culturally iconic in the Western world. His stories have inspired countless plays, ballets, and movies. Maurice Bernard Sendak (1928-2012), was a Jewish American author, illustrator of children's books and Holocaust survivor.
