VG book, no DJ. Bright cover. Touch of red on front cover's WWI biplane. Noffsinger "WWI AVIATION", 2416, says "very scarce". FLAWS: cover extrems w minor wear. FINE text, maps & plates. BUT: 1st & last two pages foxed, as are text block edges which are deckled & free of soiling. 20 b/w photos and an in text drawing of a biplane with its various sections named. Of the two fold out maps one is FINE, other has a few incorrect fold lines & a 1" fold line tear. Forward by Lord Hugh Cecil. An important book. Noffsinger 2416: "A valuble record of an active squadron beginning with the early stages of scouting to the final concepts of offensive aerial warfare during WWI", "The squadron participated in the Somme Campaign, Arras, Passchendale and the Mar '18 offensive.", "it scored 274 victories". Pilots included; Balfour, Ball, Caldwell, Bell-Irving, McCudden, Molesworth, Portal, Smith-Barry & "Billy" Bishop. Many personal accounts by these aces. Much on Bishop. One section states the ground crews picked up on Bishop's potential within days of his arrival, even before his fellow pilots. Sections at back list casualities & medals earned. VG book, no DJ.
