Very Good+ in a Very Good dustjacket. Blue paper-covered boards quarterbound in ivory cloth. Blue topstain. 152pps. There is a light touch of sunning to the board edges. Also, there is a pencil-erasure and a faint sticker shadow on the ffep. Otherwise excellent: clean, tight, square, and bright. All tips are sharp. No reading wear or previous ownership markings. The price-clipped dustjacket, glossy in a mylar sleeve, has shallow rubbing wear to the tips and the spine-ends and light rubbing to the gloss along the gutters. There is a 1/4" closed tear at the bottom of the rear panel. Overall, a nice, presentable copy of this, the author's third novel. ".This story dramatizes the old truth, that the evil in some men drives out the good in others -- but who can be sure what is good and what is evil? Raditzer was a dreg of a man, braggart and thief, foul-mouthed; there was something unholy about him. Everyone on the ship carrying troops to the Pacific avoided him. Charlie Stark, the seaman who was older than the others and had the attributes and advantages of the well-educated, was especially harassed, for Raditzer chose Charlie as his friend. In this unwelcome relationship, Charlie recognized a new responsibility. In Hawaii, where Charlie saw the war end, where he yielded to a temptation that outraged Raditzer, the guilt of Charlie Stark was compounded. Why did he have to protect this man? Charlie found it impossible to abandon him to his enemies; and something of Raditzer rubbed off, changing Charlie's life forever."
