FIRST EDITION circa 1910, French text, 4to, 330 x 240 mm, 13 x 9½ inches, red cloth spine and corners, shiny grey boards with coloured illustration of Peter in patched clothes, hands in pockets, looking sulky, hair messy, title in red, (30) pages. Colour and black and white illustrations throughout, showing the antics of naughty Peter who likes to be dirty and wear ragged clothes, he is greedy and lazy and has wonderful adventures which end badly, goes ballooning, drives a car, but finally after he mocks the gnomes he is cleaned up and reformed. Text in prose. Head and tail of spine and corners very slightly worn, tiny scrape to top corner of upper cover, a couple of tiny scrapes to lower corner, 1 light scratch to background, lower board slightly marked, front inner paper hinge neatly glued at some time, a short margin tear to a couple of pages. Contents very bright. A very good plus copy of an uncommon French imitation of the German picture book 'Struwwelpeter von Heute' first published in Furth by Loewensohn in 1910. The book develops only the story of Struwwelpeter, there is no mention of the other 9 Hoffmann stories. Our French title is not listed in Baumgartner or Ruhle, only briefly mentioned (see Baumgartner 2, 117 &128 and Ruhle No.501). No copies in Bibliotheque Nationale or Copac, 1 in WorldCat.
